A sound for the future. It is wonderful to see how Belgian jazz continues to reinvent itself, with new talents constantly emerging to enrich the vibrant scene. One of the most striking newcomers is Bodem, the trio led by saxophonist Adia Vanheerentals, who was recently featured in Klara’s De Twintigers, a selection of young musicians to watch. With Bodem, Vanheerentals excels in lyrical melodies and fresh, collective interaction.
To achieve this, she is joined by drummer Anke Verslype and guitarist Willem Malfliet. Verslype is making waves with her subtly overwhelming work in projects like aki (see: BRAND!), while Malfliet thrives in the space between pop and jazz, with acts such as Woolvs. Together, they are the ideal companions to bring the saxophonist’s short yet imaginative compositions to the stage.
Their debut album, "Kleine Mars", released under the fledgling label MOKUHI Sonorities by Nicolas Rombouts, immediately captivated audiences with its charming blend of intimacy and energy. Picture not just cosy pubs, but also summery vibes and pink confectionery.
